On Wednesday, March 11 at 2:30 PM, Dr. Michael M. Andrews will present at SXSW EDU at the Westin Downtown, Paramount 3, sharing research that reframes how schools understand and engage Black fathers.
Dr. Andrews’ dissertation, In Their Own Words and Pictures, centers a simple but urgent question:
What becomes visible when Black fathers are given the tools and space to document their own engagement expertise?
Using a photovoice methodology, Dr. Andrews invited Black fathers to document their lived experiences through photography and dialogue. The results were paramount to research, testimony, validation, and visibility.
The findings challenge dominant narratives in powerful ways:
Black fathers are deeply engaged in their children’s educational lives — as advocates, caregivers, mentors, and partners.
Systemic barriers, including racial bias and institutional unwelcomeness, often shape how that engagement is received.
Affinity spaces and community networks provide critical support, trust, and belonging.
When fathers are centered as meaning-makers, the story of family engagement changes.
This session will explore how schools and districts can move beyond performative inclusion and toward structural partnership — including co-designed father councils, culturally responsive communication practices, and policies that protect father inclusion from political shifts.
More importantly, it will highlight a powerful truth: Black fathers are not absent. They are often unseen.
In addition to the session, Coaction Collective will have a table at the SXSW EDU EXPO. Stop by to learn more about our work in family engagement, leadership development, and building systems that honor community voice.
