For several years, Coaction Collective has partnered with Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) to strengthen family engagement across the district. This week, that partnership was reflected in two sessions that brought different teams together around a shared goal: creating meaningful connections with families that support student learning and success.
On June 2, Justin Stephens facilitated an end-of-year reflection with the Family and Community Engagement team, helping participants identify key lessons learned, celebrate successes, and establish priorities for the year ahead. Two days later, he worked with Resource Center staff to launch a four-part family learning series designed to help families actively support learning at home and build stronger academic partnerships with schools.
While the sessions served different audiences, they were connected by a common purpose: strengthening family-school partnerships across Dallas ISD.
Reflecting, Learning, and Planning for What's Next
The June 2 reflection session provided an opportunity for the Family and Community Engagement team to look back on the year's work, identify areas of growth, and plan strategically for the future. Through structured discussion and reflection, team members surfaced key insights about what is working, where challenges remain, and how the district can continue to strengthen engagement efforts moving forward.
Creating space for reflection is a critical part of continuous improvement. By taking time to examine both successes and lessons learned, districts can build on existing strengths while remaining responsive to the evolving needs of students, families, and communities.

Equipping Staff to Support Families
On June 4, Justin partnered with Resource Center staff to prepare for the launch of a four-part family learning series focused on supporting academic success at home. The training introduced staff to the content, explored facilitation strategies, and helped participants think through how the series could best support families across the district.
The learning series is grounded in the belief that families play a critical role in student success. By helping families better understand how to support learning at home, monitor progress, and partner with educators, Dallas ISD is investing in stronger academic partnerships that benefit students both inside and outside the classroom.
The Research Behind the Work

Research consistently shows that family engagement has the greatest impact when it extends beyond participation in school events and focuses on learning. When families understand academic expectations, communicate regularly with educators, support learning at home, and monitor student progress, students experience stronger academic and developmental outcomes.
Meaningful engagement is not about asking families to do more. It is about creating the conditions that allow families and educators to work together toward shared goals for student success.
The Dual Capacity-Building Framework in Action
The work taking place in Dallas ISD reflects the principles of the Dual Capacity-Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships, developed by Dr. Karen Mapp and her colleagues. The framework is built on a simple but powerful premise: sustainable family engagement requires building capacity on both sides of the partnership.
Educators need the knowledge, skills, confidence, and mindset to engage families as valued partners. Families need access to information, opportunities, and support that empower them to actively participate in their children's education.
The reflection and planning session with the Family and Community Engagement team focused on strengthening educator capacity. The family learning series prepares staff to support families in building the knowledge and confidence needed to engage in student learning. Two sessions. Two entry points. One framework in action.

Two Sessions. One Shared Vision.
Dallas ISD serves tens of thousands of students across a rich and diverse community. Meaningful family engagement at that scale requires more than a single initiative or one-time training. It requires a long-term commitment to building relationships, strengthening systems, and creating opportunities for families and educators to learn together.
This week's work is a reminder that strong family-school partnerships are built intentionally. By investing in both educator and family capacity, Dallas ISD continues to create the conditions for meaningful engagement and lasting impact.
Two sessions. Two teams. One shared vision for stronger family-school partnerships.
