THE WESTIN AUSTIN DOWNTOWN

PARAMOUNT III

This session demonstrates how Photovoice, a Participatory Action Research method, can be utilized with Black fathers to enhance family-school partnerships. Drawing on visual narratives and dialogue from an affinity-based intervention, it surfaces how Black fathers experience being both present and overlooked in schools, and introduces the CHIP framework for designing culturally grounded, psychologically safe spaces for fathers.

Participants will leave with strategies to integrate images and storytelling into professional learning, strengthen father affinity spaces, and reimagine engagement practices that elevate Black fathers as vital contributors to the family school partnership.

Thanks for connecting with us in Austin at SXSW EDU! SXSW EDU is one of those rare spaces where bold ideas, creative energy, and real conversations about the future of education collide, and we were grateful for the many inspiring connections we made along the way. If we crossed paths at the Expo or during the conference, we invite you to learn more about Coaction Collective and the work we do to strengthen family engagement, leadership, and partnerships in education. Take a look around, and if something sparks an idea, we’d love to continue the conversation.
